* Claire eventually obtained, from the Vatican, a release from her vows and subsequently left the convent.
** The double doors probably lead to the hospital boiler room. During the Spanish flu epidemic, Ansel was assigned to burn bedding of flu victims at the hospital. In 1919, Ansel was ill with flu and double pneumonia. Fortunately, he survived, albeit with not all his hair. The date of the picture is not known. However, judging from Ansel’s age, it was taken significantly after 1919. Jacqueline “Jackie” (Burdick) Sparks gets credit for identifying the picture.
